"Letters, we've got letters, we've got lots and lots of letters"...was the first line of a ditty used to introduce a TV-audience write-in song request segment that was a regul…ar feature of the Perry Como variety show on NBC during the mid to late 1950's. While a small chorus of women sang this song in the background, one would see a scene of the post office processing mail, changing to a sack of mail being delivered to Perry (or "Mr. C" as he became known) who would take a seat on a plain round wooden bar stool. He would draw out a letter, supposedly at random (yeah, right) and after saying from whom the letter was sent (invariably a woman), would sing the requested song. Sometime around 1960, the ditty was changed to the following with a considerably less phrenetic, more romantic and lilting melody: "Sing to me, Mr. C, sing to me; A song that I've been waiting just to hear. Just for me, Mr. C, just for me; And everybody else will disappear." (Same barstool as before) ( Full Answer )
Ultimately, it's all down to money and persuading the right people to take on the show for broadcast. There are many different routes to air but here is a typical example: Fi…rst, someone needs to have an idea for a show. The idea needs to be refined to the point where a sampler can be produced or at least a written concept with a story board. This very first process filters out almost all ideas as very few ideas ever make it to this stage. Step two is to find someone who is prepared to take on the concept and produce a pilot. This can be an independent producer or a broadcaster. This process is hard enough to filter out 99% of all proposals and it takes a lot of leg work to find that elusive producer who wants to risk a considerable amount of money to make the first show. If the idea gets this far, a single episode will exist. Now is the time to approach channel controllers and get an agreement for a broadcast of a pilot. This is perhaps even harder than finding someone to produce the program in the first place. Channels are inundated with submissions from hopeful production companies. Another 99% of the remaining ideas fall here. So, the one in several thousand that makes it to air as a pilot will stand or fall on the feedback from viewers and advertisers. Sometimes, the pilot can make it to a full season with subsequent seasons following. The remainder will have had a single airing and never make it to the television airwaves again. Despite this apparent failure, to make it to even a single broadcast is a great achievement. Network broadcasters also generate ideas internally so some will accept very few external contributions. Even internally, the same process has to take place. Although the poor contributions are weeded out to leave the better quality programs as final contenders, it is as much to do with contacts in the industry as it is with quality of the content. Without knowing who to approach with an idea, the chances of making it to air are virtually nil. Even with the right contacts, the chances of a program making it to broadcast are only slightly better. For those who are intent on developing a show, good luck and be ready for some rejections on the way. ( Full Answer )

this could probably be debated all day long by people, and I'm just going to give my honest opinion, I mean no offense to anyone. Moral degradation is the biggest negative imp…act that television has had on our society. fifty years ago, you would have never seen anything like we have today. I have noticed a huge shift in what is "acceptable" just since I was about 10, I'm only 20 now. Looking back on television, when I was younger, I cannot remember any of the things I see today. Things such as vague sexual innuendos. I feel that this is the biggest detriment to our society, people simply losing touch with morals. Furthermore, and im sure your can find all kinds of psychological studies on this, and it is not just tv, violence towards women, and violence in general is not just accepted, it promoted! Now, im a big fan of the UFC, I love it. I watch fights whenever I get a chance, and even started trainging at one point. However, I am able to step back and know that that kind of violence is only acceptable in that context. If you go out on the street and beat somebody the way some of those guys get beat, you may be behind bars the rest of your life. It isnt just in sports that we see it though. Have you ever seen an episode of law and order, CSI, etc. That didnt have at least one disgustingly violent crime commited. and better than 50% of the time they center around sexual assult. now its rediculous to think that someone watches an episode of CSI and then snaps. (although im not dismissing that, the brain is a weird thing) However it is a dumbing down of our basic human sensitivitys that causes some of the violence we see, and this is largely due to the violent images we are seeing on tv all of our lives. Im sure I could go on for another hour or so, but ill wrap up my little tyrade. Hope I was able to help a little! ( Full Answer )
